I fish for bass in a lake that also contains a population of pike. I get a sinking feeling when the line goes limp during a good battle. To solve this problem I tried 60 lb fluorocarbon leader material. That solved the problem, but I think the diameter of the material is too large ahead of bass sized flies. I then tried nylon coated stainless wire,17lb. This material performs very well, no more lost flies to bite-offs. I take about 30 inches of the material, tie a perfection loop on one end and tie the fly on the other end, using a rapala knot. Attach the perfection loop to your leader using a loop to loop connection. To change flies, cut off the fly knot and tie a new rapala knot. When the leader gets down to less than 8 inches it's time for a new leader. The wire is easy to knot and has not kinked to this point. The Fly Angler recommends 30 lb test for musky. The down side is cost, it sells for $9.95 for 16 feet.
